GLP-1 Medications, Obesity Genetics & The Bigger Picture in Weight Loss

What I Thought About GLP-1 Agonists 4 Years Ago

When I first learned about GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic and Mounjaro, I’ll be honest—I didn’t like them.

They felt like a shortcut. A “quick fix” that skipped the deep work—understanding your genetics, addressing root causes of weight gain, and healing metabolism. I was concerned people were losing weight without learning how to eat for their body, bypassing the emotional and hormonal imbalances that triggered their obesity genes in the first place.

I also heard the negative stories—nausea, fatigue, constipation, hair loss, and rapid weight loss that overwhelmed detox pathways. Muscle loss was a huge concern. And the idea of taking a medication “forever” felt like a red flag.

So yes—I steered some people away from it.

But After 4 Years of Watching Closely, I’ve Changed My Mind

Over the past four years, I’ve worked closely with clients using GLP-1 medications—especially Mounjaro (tirzepatide)—and followed the research closely. And what I’ve seen has completely changed how I view these medications.

These are not fad diet pills. They are powerful metabolic tools with decades of clinical research behind them, now being used in new, more personalized ways.

First—What is a GLP-1?

GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1) is a hormone your body naturally produces. It:

  • Reduces hunger

  • Slows digestion

  • Improves blood sugar control

  • Regulates mood and inflammation

Tirzepatide goes further by also activating GIP receptors, making it uniquely effective for:

  • Resetting the body’s weight set point

  • Overcoming genetic weight loss resistance

  • Improving insulin sensitivity and fat metabolism

Why the Weight Set Point Matters So Much

If your body “defends” a certain weight (due to genetics, stress, lack of deep sleep or inflammation), it will fight to stay there, even when you're doing everything "right".

That’s why so many people fail on traditional diets. Their metabolism slows. Hunger increases. Fatigue sets in.

GLP-1/GIP medications change this by lowering the defended set point—allowing the body to release excess weight without fighting back.

This is a massive breakthrough, especially for people with obesity genes turned “on” through stress, trauma, poor sleep, inflammation, or hormonal shifts.

What I See Now—and Why I Prefer Mounjaro

I’ve seen Mounjaro work when nothing else has—and with fewer side effects than GLP-1-only drugs like Ozempic.

What’s even more impressive?

  • Many clients feel less joint pain and inflammation almost immediately—even without losing weight.

  • People with PCOS, menopause, insulin resistance, and binge eating see real shifts—not just on the scale, but in how their brain and body feel.

  • Mood improves. Food obsession quiets. Energy returns.

Why? Because GLP-1 receptors are found all over the body, including:

  • The brain (regulating food reward, motivation, and anxiety)

  • The gut and pancreas (controlling digestion and insulin)

  • Fat tissue and liver (reducing inflammation and improving metabolism)

But What About the Side Effects?

Yes—there can be side effects:

  • Nausea

  • Fatigue

  • Constipation

  • Hair thinning

  • Pancreatitis (seen only rare in ozempic and not dual acting medications like mounjaro)

  • Emotional detachment from food

But with proper hydration, fiber, slow titration, and genetic support, most are manageable—and temporary.

The biggest risk? Using these medications without addressing the causes of weight gain.

If you don’t support:

  • Detox pathways

  • Hormonal resilience

  • Sleep & circadian rhythm

  • Obesity genes

  • Emotional stress and addictive eating tendencies...

...the weight might come back. Or worse, you may lose the chance to make lasting change.

Do Natural Options Still Matter?

Yes! I still use and recommend:

  • Berberine

  • Resveratrol

  • Probiotics

  • Fiber

  • Fasting-mimicking diets

  • Genetic-based meal plans

These tools are gentle, affordable, and supportive—but in my experience, they don’t offer the fast or foundational reset that GLP-1/GIP agonists do.

That doesn’t mean they’re irrelevant - they do work! They are absolutely part of the long-term strategy, especially for maintenance or for those not ready for medication.

My Current Approach: Integration is Everything

GLP-1 meds are not a standalone solution—and they’re not cheating.

They create a window of clarity. A period of reduced food noise, calm brain chemistry, and improved physiology. And in that window, you must go deeper:

  • Support your genetic blueprint

  • Quiet the obesity gene triggers

  • Stabilize blood sugar and hormones

  • Rebuild your sleep and stress systems

  • Create the lifestyle your body was designed to thrive in

Genetic Coaching + Physician Oversight = The Gold Standard

Final Thoughts

There is a time for prescription medication.
There is a time for natural support.
And there is always a time for looking at your genes—and giving your body what it needs to regulate itself again.

If you're considering Mounjaro or other GLP-1 meds, please don't go it alone. Genetic health coaching and medical support are essential to make this a safe, effective, and transformational journey.
